Martha's Vineyard, MA. — She-figured Dance presents, Bits of Leverage, on October 15, 2005 at The Yard.  The program combines an eclectic mix of debut work and seasoned choreography by artistic director, Jil Matrisciano, deemed, “emphatic” by The Boston Herald.

A contemporary modern company established in 2001, She-figured Dance employs an athletic, virtuosic, and theatrical movement style that mixes the literal with the abstract. Quoted by the Vineyard Gazette, “…they ride a new wave of feminism…giving priority to a place for men and boys to stand….”  Exposing human vulnerability and strength, the company strikes a balanced chord using objectivity and humor to explore personal and sexual identity.

An award-winning choreographer, Matrisciano’s program includes, Duck Hook Company, a memoir encapsulating the phenomenon of the Vietnam War from the perspectives of the individual soldier and his platoon, as well as, Her Last Breath, Matrisciano’s signature solo work, earning her the Bessie Schoenberg Scholarship from The American Dance Festival.  The piece depicts a young woman’s terminal illness and her ultimate transformation.

On the lighter side, Male Monologues is a comical journey through the phases of manhood as seen in the eyes of their female counterparts.  Machismo and comradery set to the sounds of popular Folk music, demonstrate the company’s mission to create modern dance that is both accessible and thoughtful.  As an example of Matrisciano’s experimental approach, Void If Detached, a physical duet, uses text in conjunction with gesture and wit to uncover the interplay between one’s ego and societal expectations.

She-figured Dance has performed in the Boston area at Ten’s the Limit, Choreographer’s Group, and The Shared Choreographer’s Concert.  Other additions to the Bits of Leverage program include City Saints and the Starry-eyed Shuffle, set to vintage Rock, and the premiere of Crumble to See, accompanied by an original sound score set from Ave Maria.

The company, numbered at 10, is based between Boston and Martha’s Vineyard.  Performing members are Jil Matrisciano, Julie Caranddo and Serena Smith (co-founders), Claire Baione, Lauren Crellin, Ashley Girgenti, Rachel Goldstein, and Quinn Morton.  Lighting will be designed by Ernest W. Iannaccone www.iewilighting.com.

The Saturday, October 15 performance begins at 7:00pm.  Tickets for She-figured Dance’s, Bits of Leverage are $15 general admission. Reservations can be made by calling 508.560.8306.
